Language, Categorization, and Convention

چکیده
Linguistic meaning is a convention. This article investigates how such conventions can arise for color categories in populations of simulated “agents.” The method uses concepts from evolutionary game theory: A language game where agents assign names to color patches is played repeatedly by members of a population. The evolutionary dynamics employed make minimal assumptions about agents’ perceptions and learning processes. Through various simulations it is shown that under different kinds of reasonable conditions involving outcomes of individual games, the evolutionary dynamics push populations to stationary equilibria, which can be interpreted as achieving shared population meaning systems. Optimal population agreement for meaning is characterized through a mathematical formula, and the simulations presented reveal that for a wide variety of situations, near optimality is achieved.

Dynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach
Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...

متن کاملConvention, Form, and Figurative Language Processing
There are 2 basic controversies concerning how metaphors are processed. First, are metaphoric mappings more akin to literal comparisons or to literal categorizations? And second, is metaphor comprehension indirect or direct? We believe that these controversies are more appqent than real and that a unified theoretical framework can be offered that reconciles these opposing views. The central ide...
متن کاملStack Management and Calling Conventions
Despite the advantages and simplicity of stack machines, they are not very often found or supported in commercial computer systems. This paper explains the need for stacks in modern programming languages and describes three dimensions used to categorize the different stack implementations. Furthermore, we will discuss the application and support of stacks and their integration in modern computi...
متن کاملLanguage Conventions Made Simple
At the start of Convention (1969) Lewis says that it is "a platitude that language is ruled by convention" and that he proposes to give us "an analysis of convention in its full generality, including tacit convention not created by agreement." Almost no clause, however, of Lewis's analysis has withstood the barrage of counter examples over the years, and a glance at the big dictionary suggests ...
